The National Lawyers' Guild, Detroit and Michigan Chapter is the legal arm of social justice movements. We bring together lawyers, legal workers, jailhouse lawyers and like-minded activists to use the law as a tool for liberation rather than oppression.
- Our Legal Observers to over 100 protests and direct actions every year. Our LO's document government activity and are the first line of support for protesters detained by police.
- Our lawyers represent protesters across the state for free, providing legal representation and minimizing the ability of the government to use criminal charges as a deterrent for political activity.
- We stand up and speak out in support of those experiencing repression throughout Michigan, the United States, and the world.
- We stand up to the police: The NLG is an active, founding member of the Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability [CPTA]. CPTA speaks out on the systemic nature of police violence and racism; sponsors an annual event presenting different perspectives on “Alternatives to Policing”; and is publicly demanding a federal civil rights investigation of the unfettered violence and lack of accountability within the Detroit Police Department.
- We fight fascism, racism, and oppression wherever and whenever we can.
The need for our services is high right now., The movement for Palestine faces significant repression by governmental and university officials and law enforcement. We are on the streets and in the courtrooms daily fighting for the right to speak out without fear.
