Support Jamie's Transition Post-Incarceration

Humanize Consulting  is raising funds for Jamie, released from prison on April 22, 2021, after serving his entire eight-year sentence.

Kale, one of Humanize's Co-Founders, first met Jamie through the Prisoner Correspondence Pen Pal Project. As someone who is deeply committed to abolition, Kale was initially drawn to Jamie as a pen pal because he had mentioned his prison activism.

Jamie has spent 2/3rds of his life in the system, in group homes, residential centers, mental health facilities, juvenile detention centers, community corrections, and most recently, prison. However, it wasn't until he was transferred into his first for-profit prison that Jamie became involved with an activist group.

He began reporting about things going on inside the prisons, such as staffing shortages and assaults. He also engaged in non-violent resistant strategies, including food and water strikes that he eventually taught to other inmates.

Due to his activism, Jamie was eventually moved out of the general population and placed in supermax custody, essentially isolation, restricting his contact with other inmates. They also put a Commissioners Alert on his file, giving them unique control over his mail and the material he could have in his cell. They stopped him from receiving The Abolitionist  (issued by Critical Resistance and covering topics like housing, mental health, racial capitalism, etc.). They also removed books like The 48 Laws of Power. These were deemed a "detrimental threat to the safety and good order of the institution."

Although Jamie had spent 3 years in isolation, the warden was not interested in moving him into the general population to help him get used to being around other people. As is typical with those being released, Jamie was provided with no support in the form of counselling, help with finding a job, or any support for reintegration.

Now that Jamie has been released, we'd like to help give him a slight head start. Humanize is running their Prison Abolition 101 Online Workshop and will be giving Jamie all the funds raised to help him buy things he needs (like size 16 work boots, he's a big dude!). We also helped set up this GoFundMe, with 100% of the money will go to him.

Thanks so much for your help! And here is a message from Jamie:

My name is James Arthur, I'm a 31 year old, recently released from prison. I spent eight years inside a system that's badly broken and swallowed by the prison industrial complex's tentacles.

I spent years studying penology, sociology, psychology. One of the greatest books I read was Companions in Crime- by Mark Warr.

I was imprisoned at a powerful private corrections company run in Nashville, Tennessee, CoreCivic, a company netting billion dollar profits annually. I was paid $0.17 an hour to work for them, but I was released with no help other than $75, and a bus ticket to anywhere America.

There was no reentry planning. There was no transition from 2 years isolation- str8 to society. I even asked the warden - Isn't it dangerous to take someone who's spent almost 3 years in isolation, with no reentry planning str8 to the streets? He said, you've made it this long, you can make it a little longer.

Now that I'm released, I need money for clothes, car battery, fuel, tags, registration, title, and food. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you for your support.

Respectfully,

- Jamie
