Vesta Cay is a digital archive, container and community initiative honouring the lives and impact of Queer Jamaicans. Functioning as an altar and memorial ground, this archive will include names and information about Jamaicans from the LGBTQ+ community whose lives have been lost or taken. Named after 4-Vesta, the brightest asteroid visible from earth, Vesta Cay is a body of its own. A bright, self-sufficient islet formed on the sediments of queer memory, grief, and celebration. Along with the archive, Vesta Cay also contains two subjective maps providing a space for queer Jamaicans for their memories to be venerated beyond the violence they experienced. Vesta Cay also offers yearly workshops to provide holistic psychosocial support for Queer Jamaicans to process their personal and collective grief.
Vesta Cay is a four year initiative entering its second year on June 30, 2025. We are fundraising to cover operation costs for 2025-2026. These funds will go towards:
- Covering website, domain, telecommunication and other digital fees.
- Expanding the archive (fees for newspaper and web-based archival access, digitizing material entries, organisation of artefacts)
- Restructuring operations and redistributing labour (compensating 5-7 personnel from the Queer community to support administrative, archival, publication, community, and programming needs)
- Venue fees, material expenses for in-person programming.
- Stipends for workshop facilitators and participants.
