A homeschool educational sailing journey for young teens

Dear friends, family members and supporters near and far,

With much anticipation and excitement, we are preparing for our learning journey over land and sea!

In May, our little group of four homeschooled 13/14 year olds and two tutors, will make the journey from Cornwall to Scotland on a tall-ship.

Our group is making this journey to experience a real-world adventure while safely being guided by experienced sailors. This is a hands-on sailing trip in which the students will become a vital and competent part of the crew. They will learn how to hoist sails, plan the course, tie knots with conviction and even take night watch. The students will see their homeland from a different perspective, meet wildlife and experience themselves in new ways. They might meet challenges, like homesickness or even seasickness, but they will also enjoy climbing the mast, going on little excursions with kayaks and paddle boards, taking on cooking shifts and sleeping in very cosy berths. Once we make it back to shore we will have time to rest and reflect together on the special journey. The students will now have a new and unique experience, and a new skill-set, for the rest of their lives!

As our group makes its way back to the south of England by car and train, we will visit places that we've studied in our lessons leading up to the trip, such as Robert Owen's revolutionary textile mill community in New Lanark.

Our educational trip will last eleven days. The students, their parents and tutors are making mighty efforts to fundraise via face-to-face events such as cake, craft and boot sales, as well as home-cooked community dinners and folk dances. We are hoping to raise at least £3,000 through this gofundme page.
