SHARE THE MEANS OF (RISOGRAPH PRINT) PRODUCTION!
SHAUHAUS PRESS RISO COLLECTIVE is an independent run Risograph press and studio currently housed in the Mississippi State University Department of Art, but operated and owned by the local community and its contributors.
The collective was initiated with the purchase of a used RISO EZ 221 digital duplicator, and is seeking initial collaborators and contributors to become shared owners of the machine and its resources, or donators to help make the resources and capabilities of Risograph printing available to students and the local community. In the future, the press hopes to become self-sustained on the profits of its production (zines, posters, calendars, workshops, exhibitions, etc).
Risograph printing can be used for the mass production of printed ephemera such as zines, posters, publications, and more. The primary goal of the collective is accessibility, for these resources and materials to become a tool for the community, to share the work of artists, writers, poets, people, activists, and marginalized voices in Mississippi (specifically in the Golden Triangle area) and beyond.
The total cost for operation of the Risograph is $2000 (for one color printing), based on the following breakdown:
- The machine was purchased for $700
- Ink cartridges, per color, runs approximately $75 each (each cartridge can handle between 10 and 50 thousand prints)
- Ink drums, per color, run between $200 & $700
- Ink masters, per color, run between $50 & $200
- Risograph paper, per ream, runs between $50 and $100 (500 - 1000 sheets)
- General maintenance, per year, can run between $250 & $1000
The collective is seeking part owners first, who will have access to the machine and its resources for their own practices and community programming. Donations are gladly accepted, but please specify whether you would like to become a part-owner or a donor by following the below donation tiers.
Please consider the suggested donation tiers to ensure an even distribution of ownership of the collective:
- Become a part owner: $50 (After donating, contact Aubrey via the GoFundMe contact form OR send an email at the contact(s) found at SHAUHAUS. Aubrey will also respond to each $50 donation with further ownership information.)
- Sponsor the press with a donation: any amount! Small or big, everything helps us build.
This collective, and the machines/resources at its disposal, aim to decentralize the means of production, and grant access to accessible and exceptional methods of visual communication!
In addition to ownership and use of the used RISO EZ 221, which until further resources/funding, can only print in black and white, there is also the possibility to use a new RISO SF 9450, which can print in multiple colors. The new machine is owned and operated for the research and pedagogical programming of Professor of Graphic Design Aubrey Pohl and will be housed in the same space as SHAUHAUS PRESS. Although this newer machine will have more protected use, as it was purchased with Mississippi State research funds, part owners in the collective will also have access, and there will be workshops and public facing programming built around both machines. After all, Risograph is for the community!
