Hi my name is Jono Hart, AKA The Pub Whisperer, and through my social enterprise (Dragonhart Productions) I'm raising funds to provide pubs across Australia with Suicide Prevention Checklist Posters and Coasters as well as free Mental Health First Aid training.

Over the past 13 years I have suffered bouts of mental illness and I know more help is needed to assist men with poor mental health in pubs.

Patrons have been suffering in silence since Covid19 hit with an array of new rules hurting the hospitality industry over these past 19 months.

Rules around hotel patrons being unable to drink standing up, being unable to sing and dance or order a drink without a mask has taken its toll on communities around the country.

But it goes beyond the pandemic. Mental illness and alcohol-induced suicide is at an all time high and there are people unsure how to behave in their local. For many pubs, patronage has been in decline.

Even before Covid19 statistics relating to alcohol abuse were alarming.

Statistics show us that around 30,000 deaths in Australia are alcohol-induced. That figure increased by 8.3% in 2020 according to The Australian Bureau of Statistics. Alcohol abuse is also responsible for around 70,000 therapy treatments in Australia every year.

We, as a society, need to address these statistics with answers to these problems.

Which is why I'm raising funds to get these posters and coasters sent to Aussie pubs and I have teamed up with a MHFA Training organisation to get suicide prevention strategies into as many pubs as possible. So we can shout these pubs the resources they need to assist their communities and give them a shout out through the Great Aussie Pubs website as well.

Pubs are often the places people go to escape their problems and the world right now, so as a society we need to be creating strategies for bar staff to know when people are going too far.

The Checklist features ways for bar staff to listen to and address patrons who may be on the brink of suicide. The Mental Health First Aid training equips publicans and bar staff with the skills needed to know how to respond to patrons with mental health problems.

Going forward from Covid19 it will be vital for pubs to be more proactive in creating better mental health for their patrons. Gambling, alcohol and pokie addiction are all cases to point to. Great Aussie Pubs is here to celebrate those pubs doing the best for their community. They deserve a shout and a shout out!

If you can donate, and you know of a local that cares for their community, please list it in your comment, with a reason why they deserve to be recognised as a Great Aussie Pub and be sent posters and coasters and receive the free MHFA training.
